About Bricks Kilns.
Introduction
Kilns are the place where bricks are prepared. Different kinds of laborer are hired for the kilns (bhattis). work. There are mostly two types of kiln work.
1. In one part clay is formed into bricks. It is then shaped into a mold. Most of the laborers hired for this hard labor are Christians. Christians are one of the poorest communities in Pakistan. A large percentage of Christians are involved in this work. They work very long hours in the sun at temperatures exceeding 40C or 104F. Their daily labor results in an average pay of 50-75 cents per day.
2, The second part is where the bricks loaded by hand and carried to be baked in high temperature kilns.
Child Labor
Child labor is a major issue for some Pakistani industries, and brick kilns are a good example of that. Christian Children as young as 5 years old can be found employed at these factories. The income of the household, not being enough to feed the entire family, means that many children, who should be in school playing with other children their age, instead must go to the local brick factories and work long hours. They work all day, and sometimes into the night - for barely enough money to feed themselves and their siblings at home. It should be no surprise that young girls working at these factories are especially vulnerable, as incidents of abuse have sometimes become known. These children are our future and we are burning their future away with the coal in the firing kilns.
Affects of Bricks Kilns
Coal is often used to burn the bricks in the kilns and the heavy smoke contains soot (fine carbon particulates) that penetrate deep inside the lungs and can cause severe asthma, congestion, chronic lung diseases and even cancer. As with other hazards, the young children are particularly vulnerable to sickness, disease, and mortality.
How much the children are paid for Brick Kiln work?
Children are paid1 rupee per brick, but only if these unbaked bricks are finished by being baked in the kilns. Because many times when rain comes it destroys their unbaked bricks and then they are not paid for all of their labor.
The adults earn 65 to 80rupees per day which is equal to one dollar or less per day. With these meager earnings they can hardly eat two times per day and are unable to enjoy the basic needs of life. The fact is that they live a life suffering like unto slavery.
Why are mostly poor Christian people compelled to work in Brick kilns ?
The owner of bricks kilns give loans to the poor Christian people and then they are entrapped and are never able to pay back the loan. This being the case they have to work for their whole life along with their children in a vain attempt to repay the loan. What can you do for these poor Christian Kiln workers?
1. Please pray that the Lord will open the doors for these people to be enabled to pay their loans back and gain freedom from the loans and oppression as well as giving freedom to the upcoming Christian generation as well
2. Please pray that after the Lord opens the door for them to escape this kind of bondage that he will provide a way for them to start their own business or get other jobs where they can support their families and provide hope for the next generation.
3. Please pray that the children will be able to go to school. The children need schooling so our coming Christian generation can read and understand the word of God and be saved.
4. Please pray that the Lord opens the door for a school in Kasur to provide schooling for these children. We are already operating one open air school, but it is without building, furniture and other basic needs. Please pray that Lord open doors so that we could help to educate all of the bricks klin children free of cost.
5. Please pray for more resourses so that we can keep feeding the Bricks kiln workers spiritually and physically.
6. Please pray that the Lord will provide to us our own ministry transportation so that we can reach every corner of Pakistan to preach the Gospel to people like these.
